Peat Plugs
Large drains dug deep into the peat have lowered the water table and accelerated the breakdown of peat. Restoration needs this process to be reversed, and the peat itself is the perfect material for this. Peat is dug from nearby borrow pits, packed firmly into the drain, and keyed into the banks. The original surface vegetation is replaced on top. Each plug is built slightly higher than the surrounding bog to allow for natural settling. Peat plugs work best where a thick peat layer remains at the base. The water level behind each dam will rise, removing the gradient that allowed water to drain from the bog. When properly installed, peat plugs can last indefinitely, allowing drains to naturally disappear as the bog heals.
