Overview

This cutover bog had been drained, the peat was compacted and Rushes and scrub were spreading. Much of the peat had already been lost. A detailed Restoration Action Plan was developed using information from drone and ground surveys. Data was collected on peat depth, slope analysis, drain depth and width and the vegetation mapped. Planned works were screened and approved by NPWS before work began. Restoration works included reprofiling peat banks, installing dams, removing conifers, and stabilising bare peat. The site is now on a path to recovery. Rewetting will slow carbon loss, improve habitats for wildlife, and encourage the return of peat-forming plants. Recovery takes time but it has begun.
