Geotextiles for Peat Stabilisation
Bare peat is vulnerable to erosion and breakdown through contact with the air. On exposed areas, biodegradable jute netting is laid over the surface and secured with wooden pins. The netting shields the peat from heavy rain, reducing erosion and preventing peat particles from washing away. This is especially important on reprofiled peat banks where vegetation has been largely removed. Geotextiles help retain surface moisture during dry periods, creating better conditions for mosses and seedlings to establish. Over time, plants grow through the mesh and bind the surface together. The jute gradually decomposes and becomes incorporated into the peat. Geotextiles provide temporary support at a critical stage, protecting fragile peat surfaces and accelerating the return of healthy bog vegetation.
